Jamia Hamdard was conceived as a seat of higher learning in Unani Medicine, Islamic Studies, Biosciences, Pharmacy, Nursing and other areas of knowledge by its founder as a means of fulfilling the object of the wakf. Over the past two decades Jamia Hamdard has emerged as outstanding institution of higher learning with distinct and focused academic programs. The university offers a number of postgraduate and doctoral programs in several disciplines in realm of life sciences and health sciences.
Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (HIMSR) at Hamdard Nagar in New Delhi is an ambitious project of Jamia Hamdard aimed at furthering its scope in the life sciences and health domains and providing quality healthcare at an affordable cost.
HIMSR is envisaged to have a Medical College, a Dental College, an Institute for Hospital and Healthcare Management in addition to the exiting Nursing College, Physiotherapy College, and a College for training other Para-medical staff. Planned as a new centre of excellence in medical education, HIMSR will offer courses at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and post-doctoral levels in medical and allied subjects.
In the first phase, the institute is supported by two teaching hospitals, namely, the 606 Bedded Hakeem Abdul Hameed Centenary Hospital and 240 Bedded Sayeeda Memorial Hospital. These are currently being upgraded in conformity to Medical Council of India guidelines. In addition a 200 Bedded Hamdard Specialty Hospital is planned, deploying state of the art in medical technology to deliver tertiary level medical care while at the same time affording the best in infrastructure at HIMSR for advanced learning and research in medicine.
Deemed as a Self Financing, Unaided Private Institute HIMSR is affiliated to Jamia Hamdard and is designed to become a parallel private healthcare system in New Delhi. Once operational, it will not only change the dynamics of healthcare delivery in Delhi but will emerge as an excellent centre for learning in medicine and allied disciplines.
Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research is the great leap forward in line with the vision of the founders of Jamia Hamdard and in fulfilling the dream of Hakeem Abdul Hameed to create an institute for suffering humanity. It shall establish the philosophy of Hamdard "Compassion, Concern, Care and sharing in pain."
